How to Submit your Newly Launched Website to Search Engines

search engine submission

Submitting a newly launched website is easy if you know exactly how to do it. In the following I will describe the exact process of website search engine submission so that when you have designed your site and are set out to submit it, you can do it effectively and in an efficient manner.

Submitting your Website to Google

Google dominates the global search engine world with a larger percentage of searches each month than all of the other search engines combined. Getting your site to rank in Google should be top priority when attempting to create a profitable website that brings in traffic or visitors.

First of all, you need to have a Google account. Sign up for a gmail account if you don’t already have one. Next, find webmaster tools. The best way to do this is to search Google for “Google webmaster tools”. You will see “Search Engine Console” at the top of the results, and you should click on this. You will be asked to sign in to the Search console where you can submit a site. Later on you can use the search console by Google webmaster tools to gather information on how your site is performing in the search results.

Once you have accessed the Google search console, you click “Add property” to add a website. In the text field, enter your website’s url, in the http://yoursite.com format. Next, you will be asked to verify your site. There are a few different ways to do this. You have to prove to Google that you own the site. The recommended way is to upload an html file to your server in the root folder of your site. In order to do this you need an FTP application. Use Filezilla for this. Search Google for Filezilla, and download the program. Once you have opened Filezilla, you need the hostname, which is numerical and can be provided by your hosting provider. You also need the password to your hosting account, and the file name on your host’s server where your website is located. Enter this information into the fields at the top of the Filezilla program. Next, you have to download the html verification file from Google webmaster tools onto your own computer. Next, locate the file in the Filezilla program, and drag and drop it into the root folder of your site in the adjacent window in the program. The upload process will begin immediately. Once the file is uploaded, you can click verify your site.

There are also other methods of verifying your site if you don’t want to use an FTP program. If you know anything about code, you can go into the header of the home page of your site, and copy and paste the code that you find under alternate methods in Google webmaster tools right after the first <head> tag. Save the file and go back to Google and verify. These two methods are the most common. You can also verify your site with Google analytics. However you will still be required to copy and paste a code snippet into your site.

Once you have verified your Google site, you need to choose a target country. This is usually the country where you are located. Then you will need to repeat the process and submit a site with a www and one without a www on the front of the url. So, you will actually be submitting two sites to Google, a www version and one without the www. Then you will select a preferred version. It doesn’t really matter which one you choose, it’s up to you how you want the url of your site to appear.

It is also important to submit a sitemap to Google. A sitemap is an xml file that contains all of the pages on your site. You can create it manually, however WordPress has plugins that will generate a sitemap automatically. If you have a smaller site, you can code it manually. It’s fairly easy, just search for “xml sitemap format” on Google. It’s basically just the same code snippet over and over again. Each code block references a different page of your website and allows Google to index all of the individual pages on your website more easily.

Submitting Your Website to Bing

Bing is the second largest search engine in the world, and it should be the next priority after Google. Sign up for a Microsoft account. You will probably be using Outlook if you don’t already have an existing Microsoft account. Run a search for Bing webmaster tools, and click on the Bing Webmaster tools link at the top of the results. You will be asked to sign in. Once you have accessed the webmaster portal, you will see a text box that says “add a site”. Type the url of your site in this box with the http:// part included. You will be asked to submit a sitemap. Just enter the url of your sitemap at the prompt. Next, you will be asked to verify your site. You can do this the same way you did it with Google. It will just be another html file upload in the root folder of your site, or it will be to copy and paste another piece of code right after the <head> in the code of your site’s home page. There is another way, which is to place a piece of code into the appropriate text field on your domain account.

One thing Bing lets you do is submit 40 pages a month to their index. Just click on your site from the Bing webmaster tools portal, and then click on “configure my site” -> “Submit urls” and you can list the urls of individual pages.

Other Search Engines

Now that you have submitted your site to the biggest portion of the web searches, you can submit your site to all of the other search engines. This is easy. Search for “Submit a Site to All Search Engines”. You will find various free services which allow you to submit your site to a wide variety of search engines. Find two or three of these search engine submission sites, and submit your site to all of them. After five minutes, check your e-mail, because you may have to follow up with some of them.

Once you have done all of this, your site will have been submitted to all of the relevant search engines, and you have accomplished the task.
